about

The rising Dutch alt-R&B-band ‘Dragonfruit’ announces their new single ‘Wasted’ as a fresh addition to the Super Sonic Jazz Records roster.

“Born out of a love for sample-hiphop and neo-soul”, Dragonfruit lays down a chilled yet danceable sound that is characterised by their tasteful fusion of off-kiltered boom-bap rhythm, neo-soul-like musicianship, rich lo-fi textures and the alluring voice of Danique van der Vlugt. With their first two singles “Gears of the Giant Machine” and “Some Say” being well-received by national and international press, they return with a sublime single that revolves around a relevant message of reflection and love. “Wasted” releases on Monday June 22th.

The use of hard-hitting beats, layered synth electronics and delicate soundscapes weave into the driving, sassy vocals of Danique van der Vlugt. The lyrics tell a story of someone who felt betrayed by their love for someone else but eventually bounces back to bring positivity into the world. It’s modern R&B that has glimmerings of Hiatus Kaiyote, with a dash of BadBadNotGood-like percussive flair. Unique, new-school, and mesmerising all at the same time.

Hailing from Rotterdam, the band have already created a buzz for themselves with singles ‘Gears of the Giant Machine’, and ‘Some Say’, tracks that received special love from several publications, including Earmark, KALTBLUT, and Somewhere Soul. Alongside keyboardists Anton de Bruin and producer Sjoerd Huissoon, the band have merged a suave style of soul and hazy electronics alongside deeper influences from the likes of Flying Lotus, J Dilla, Mahalia and Sabrina Claudiothe. It’s a unique North Sea flavour that lands perfectly into a growing scene of jazz loving, soul performers with lively beats and rich energy.
