‘’Born out of a love for sample-hiphop and neo-soul’’. That is the foundation of the Dutch, Rotterdam-based alt-R&B-band Dragonfruit. With influences that span from Flying Lotus and J Dilla to Mahalia and Sabrina Claudio, the sound of Dragonfruit is characterized by a mix of soundscapes, old-school samples and electronics that, together with the mesmerizing vocals of lead singer Danique van der Vlugt, create a chilled but very danceable atmosphere.

Their first single ‘’Gears of the Giant Machine’’ gained over 100 000 streams and now they returned with their second single ‘’Some Say’’. This track wants to confront you with the question if you put any worth on other people’s opinions about you and in what degree you let this dictate your life and your choices. This theme gives ‘’Some Say’’ a strong social message and lets you contemplate if you should have more confidence in yourself and your choices.

Produced by Sjoerd Huissoon, also-known for the Dutch electronic duo Amy Root, together with the keyboard player of the band Anton de Bruin, Some Say brings a relaxed and modern sound to the table. With a beat that is driven by energetic drums together with a moving bassline, topped off with atmospheric synths and sounds and the floating vocals of Danique van der Vlugt, this track brings you into a dreamy but energetic vibe. Mainly in the outro of the song, the synth arsenal and their Bonobo and Flying Lotus influences shine through.

For this single, the band collaborated with Rotterdam-based artist ‘’Triomphe’’, who guides you to an unexpected climax and presents the other side of the story. Fed by emotions, yet unbothered by hearsay.
