Born out of a love for sample-hiphop and neo-soul’’. That is the foundation of the Dutch, Rotterdam-based alt-R&B-band Dragonfruit. With influences that span from Flying Lotus and J Dilla to Mahalia and Sabrina Claudio, the sound of Dragonfruit is characterized by a mix of soundscapes, old-school samples and electronics that, together with the mesmerizing vocals of lead singer Danique van der Vlugt, create a chilled but very danceable atmosphere.

With their first two singles ‘’Gears of the Giant Machine’’ and ‘’Some Say’’ well-received by national and international press, they return with something different.
Their lastest release is an instrumental track called ‘’U.’’ which goes hand in hand with a short animation film created by Dutch animator Astrid Martirossian. This collaboration came to life through their previous works on their singles and they decided to go all out this time.

U. sends a message of isolation and the effects on the human condition because of it. It shows the path of someone who wants to belong in the digital world rather than the real one, but can you really define the digital world as ‘’unreal’’? With hints of popular culture flying by, bits turn into leaves and vice versa, which creates a distorted world view for both the obsessed character and the audience.

The video gets characterized by the colourful and hand drawn visuals of Astrid Martirossian, who has previously created artwork for several other music artists, writers and even festivals. Blessed (or cursed) with an overactive imagination, Astrid has a hard time sticking to one style and instead finds pleasure in experimenting, exploring and reinventing. However, she is always careful in her attention to details and symbolism, of which there is plenty to find in the animation for “U.” for those with observant eyes.
